How can a woman get a medication abortion in Latin America?
There are several ways that women in the region can obtain a medication abortion:
Mifepristone/misoprostol is available Guyana and Uruguay. Women living in these countries or women traveling to these countries may be able to obtain this regimen.
Mifepristone is available in Mexico City. Women residing in the Distrito Federal may obtain an abortion without restriction as to reason in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Women in other states in Mexico can travel to Mexico City to obtain a medication abortion with the mifepristone/misoprostol regimen.
Misoprostol is widely available in the region. In many countries, misoprostol is available from pharmacies. In Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela, Safe Abortion Hotlines are available. These hotlines are staffed by volunteers who give women information on how to use misoprostol themselves for a safe abortion
Telemedicine services such as Women on Web and Women Help Women may be able to provide mifepristone/misoprostol to women living in countries where abortion is legally restricted and where mifepristone is not otherwise available.
